The Speedwell proved to have many problems right from the beginning. After we were out approximately 300 miles it was discovered that the ship was taking on water and it was decided that both ships would have to turn back. The Speedwell’s passengers were taken onto the Mayflower. It was later revealed to me that a number of individuals who had been on the Speedwell declined to board the Mayflower. As I stand and look out into the boundless ocean at night I often wonder about these individuals and sometimes question if I made the right decision.
It was a month ago today that we first embarked on this journey toward America. It had been a long and arduous journey that started long before this actual sea voyage. When we left Europe I remember Pastor Robinson falling to his knees and with watery cheeks commended us with most fervent prayers. The first week on the ship was of great wonder and amazement at what was actually occurring. While we had planned the trip for many months, the actual event of going through with this journey seemed forever far off. As I write this journal I look in all directions and all I view is water and the feeling is slightly unsettling. For the first time I realize that I will most likely never see the land of my youth again.
I remember the days when we lived in the East Midlands in England. As I watched the last ship leave from Europe I acutely remembered my childhood time there and picking apricots from my grandmother’s farm. For many years my life there followed this tranquility and I spent many such summers with my family in such peace and happiness and worship. We are of the Christian faith, but our understanding is a pure one.
