However, diplomats from other countries have been accused of more serious things including human or drug trafficking, smuggling in of goods and even espionage.
Diplomatic privileges and immunity are exceptions provided for by international law under the Vienna Convention. The aim is to provide a representative of one country in another with immunity from prosecution or undue restriction in the conduct of their affairs while in the host country. However, diplomats can be expelled by the host, if the latter judges it to be prudent to do so.
