PART A

This discussion is designed to introduce you to the field of Sociology and to put your sociological imagination into practice. After you have read the textbook and lectures assigned for this week, please respond to the following questions:

Step 1: Identify a social issue in your community. Try and choose one that negatively impacts a significant number of people in your community and/or is relevant to your life.

Step 2: Imagine you are a sociologist who works for a government agency or non-profit. You have been assigned the task of putting together a proposal on how to address the issue you identified in part one. Your supervisor emails you and asks you for a summary of your proposal. Draft a 2-4 paragraph response email that accomplishes the following:

  1. Identifies and explains a sociological theory from this week’s reading and lectures that might help you approach the exploration of the social phenomenon you choose in Step 1.
  2. Discusses some of the ways this theory would approach the issue. For example, you might explain the pros and cons of your chosen perspective and/or discuss how your chosen theory differs from the other major sociological theories.
