Paul and Pete were life-long friends. They went to college together and both studied wildlife biology.After graduation, they both went to work as salaried employees of the U.S. Forest Service. After a time, they decided to devote their spare time to the understanding, appreciation and protection of grizzly bears. They formed an informal business called “Bears Are Us,” with no written documentation, collecting donations, giving talks, selling books and prints, writing articles, and doing many others things related to the benefit of bears. After payment of expenses, all money went to study grants, habitat purchase, or other charitable enterprises for the good of grizzly bears. Over one million dollars per year went through Bears Are Us. Paul and Pete both drew a salary, signed checks, had equal say in budget and program decisions, hiring and firing of personnel, and in all other matters. So, are Paul and Pete partners, and is Bears Are Us a partnership? Why or why not? What does it take to be a partnership?
