Step 4: Compose your outline: We will do this in class together!!!!! You will earn points EVERY day on only what you have ready for class. This is a 50 point assignment!
- Determine your method of organization: For this speech, problem/solution is generally the best choice.Use at least 5 sources of information and a variety of supporting materials (evidence) including examples, statistics, testimony, and comparison/contrast (see chapter 6). REMEMBER to cite your FIVE sources verbally in the speech as used. Failure to cite sources is an automatic DRASTIC grade deduction!!
- Prepare a complete outline: Use full sentences and allow ONLY one sentence per outlined point. Plan and outline an introduction and conclusion after you have written the body (see Chapters 8, 9, and 10). Be sure to include a central idea in your introduction. Include a Works Cited page with your five sources in proper MLA style. We will check each part of your speech in class and you will receive a grade on what you have that day!!
- Consider whether a visual aid or emotional appeal would make your information more persuasive.
Step 5: Practice your speech: Practice speech delivery and time your speech. Now that you have written the speech, practice delivery to diminish anxiety and build your confidence. Practice from your speaking outline that you have prepared on note cards before your speech day. DO NOT read your speech. Reading your speech will cost you at least a letter grade. Make sure you stay within 5 to 7 minutes by timing your practice sessions.

As a speech textbook points out: "Questions of policy have to do with our actions in the future: there is something wrong in our world, and we need to correct it; we have a problem that needs to be solved; there is danger ahead that must be avoided, tendencies in society that are potentially harmful. Speakers address future courses of action by urging specific policies."
**Your specific purpose should follow the following format:
To persuade my audience that X (policy makers) should (or should not) do Y (specific course of action). Sample purposes that follow the format are below. MAKE SURE YOURS SOUNDS LIKE THESE!
