To save utilitarianism from the criticism that it is a philosophy "fit only for pigs," J.S. Mill introduces what I call the quality/quantity distinction between types of pleasures. As we've seen, there are higher pleasures and lower pleasures. Higher pleasures are distinguished from lower pleasures by the fact that, if a person is acquainted with pleasures of both types, they will not sacrifice a higher pleasure for any amount of the lower pleasure. Also Mill thinks that higher pleasures are more fulfilling, safer and more secure, and better for us long-term.

But Mill has been accused of being elitist with this division. Poetry and classical music are not the sort of things that most people enjoy (even if you do!) so why should these be superior?

Mill's defense against this objection is, "Though men often make their election for the nearer good, this is because inferior pleasures are the only ones they have access to." What do you think of this as a defense?

Thank you
