Body Image

The advertisement that I found is from the internet, and it is advertising bra's for females. The advertisement depicts 10 young women standing in front of a grey background, wearing only a bra and underwear. The models whom they used are of different ethnicities, but all are about the same size. They are very thin, petite young ladies. In the center of the advertisement, in bold lettering, it says "The Perfect 'Body'." Under this statement there are smaller letters that are not bold that says "Perfect fit. Perfect comfort. Perfectly soft. Explore the collection." Below each model there are names of the type of bra that they are modeling.

*This advertisement was found on Bing Images by searching "teen body image ad." This particular ad is a Victoria's Secret ad.

1.    Who is the intended audience for this advertisement? What age group? Male or female?

This advertisement is targeting young women whose age group is most likely between 13-25.

2.    What subliminal and/or overt messages does this advertisement send?

The message in this advertisement is subliminal as well as overt. It say's "the perfect 'body'," meaning the bra, but they are actually depicting the models who have the perfect body.

3.    How would this ad be interpreted differently by each gender?

Honestly, I believe it is pretty straightforward in saying that these young women have the perfect body, and I think they both genders can see that plainly.

4.    Do you think this ad is inaccurate in its portrayal of body image? If so, in what ways? If not, explain why.

Yes, this ad is inaccurate in its portrayal of body image because no one has a "perfect" body. Perfect is only an opinion that someone has.

5.    Why do you think this ad and its product may be appealing to adolescents?

This ad is appealing to adolescents in more than one way. The brand of these bra's are Victoria's Secret, which is one of the more popular lingerie brands today. Another reason it is appealing is because it is claiming that these women have the perfect body, and that is what adolescent girls want. They want to meet the expectations of societies model of the perfect body, which is highly unreasonable for most girls.

6.    Why do you think the marketers chose to use this specific content and imagery?

I think that marketers chose this content and imagery because they know that by selling this image of a perfect body will make adolescent girls want to buy their products. I say this meaning that even if they cannot physically get the perfect body that these models have they can at least have the perfect bra that the models do.

To simply put it, body image is just how a person views their body and how it looks to them. As adolescents approaches, a teen's body will grow and change in ways that it never has before. They may feel self-conscious or maybe some will feel self-centered, depending on how society and their peers make them feel. The media often blast "ideal" or "perfect" bodies of both male and female, and these standards that are set usually are impossible to meet. The Bible states, But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7). This is saying that God does not look at people by their appearance on the outside like man does, but He looks at their appearance of their heart. More people should have this state of mind, instead of judging people by their outward appearance they should look at the inside beauty of a person.
