Application Assignment #6: Identity Formation

What: In this assignment, you are aiming to demonstrate the following objectives: Apply theories of development in explaining your own or a fictional character’s development

Why: It is important to be able to apply the theories and communicate your rationale for specifying particular things.

How:

1. Answer the following questions by typing into a word document; make sure your answers are substantive (i.e., if you are asked to write a paragraph, don’t write one sentence, if you are asked why, make sure to specify a specific theory and why your choice makes sense with that theory), accurate, and clear (i.e., free of grammar errors).

2. Review your answers for grammar and spelling.

3. Review your answers to ensure that they are accurate, clear, and substantive. Check your answers against the rubric.4. Paper must follow APA format and the writing guidelines indicated here.

Questions For this assignment, you will be reflecting on identity formation and theories/topics associated with identity formation. You are free to use your own experience in this assignment, but if you would not like to share your personal information, you may use a fictional character (e.g., Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, etc.) – just let me know which character you are using. Also, if you wish to make up a character, you can do that as well (just let me know and describe a bit about them).1. Determine whether you will use your own experience or a fictional character for the following prompts. Either only discuss yourself or the ONE character you selected. Every requirement of this paper should only focus on ONE person/character. If you want to speak about a specific community, make sure you are relating it to your chosen person/character to maintain consistency.

2. In at least one thoughtful and thorough paragraph, describe facets of the individual's identity. This could include: religious identity, political identity, vocational identity, gender identity, racial/ethnic identity, and any other salient identity factors. In addition, include

  • Select at least 3 of these facets
  • Either discuss what these facets (a) mean to you or do not mean to you/character (b) the impact/influence these facets have in your/character's life, (c) discuss how these facets were developed, or (d) how you/character express these facets in light of the reading/class. If you do not wish to disclose particular identities to the instructor for any reason (e.g., religious, political, gender identities); please feel free to leave these out.

  • What does it mean to achieve identity and experience role confusion? Use your own language (i.e., don’t directly quote from the book or internets).
  • Then apply this description to your own/the character’s (even if ongoing) identity formation.
  • Where are you (or the character) in this process? Support your answer with an example. (You may choose to apply this theory to a specific facet of identity since one could be experiencing this process in different ways based on which identity you are focused on).
  • Write at least 10 sentences

4. In at least one thoughtful and thorough paragraph, describe Marcia’s four identity statuses in your own words. In addition, include

  • Where are you (or the character) in this process? Support your answer with an example. (You may choose to apply this theory to a specific facet of identity since one could be experiencing this process in different ways based on which identity you are focused on).
