Case 2.3 Recruiting for the Bank

1. Based on ideas described in the trait approach, do you think Pat is looking for the right characteristics in the people he hires?

I think he is looking for the right characteristics but there is always more characteristic that can be reviewed in the candidates. Also, people can look great on paper but still not make a great fit.

2. Could it be that the retention problem raised by upper management is unrelated to Pat’s recruitment criteria?

Yes, Upper management sees everything that is going wrong but not always whats right.

3. If you were Pat, would you change your approach to recruiting?

No, I think his approach is fine. You can only guess so much on how a person will fit within a company.

Study the following cases from Chapter 2 (Trait Approach) and Chapter 3 (Skills Approach). Answer the questions that follow each of the cases.

  1. Case 2.3:  Recruiting for the Bank
  2. Case 3.1:  A Strained Research Team

Type a report preferably in MS Word. Save it preferably as a Word document (***.doc or **.docx) to the hard drive of your computer or on a storage device such as a disk or a flash drive. Give the file a name as follows: Last Name_Case_Study1 (example: Smith_Case_Study1).  Point will be deducted if the file name does not begin with your last name.  You need to submit just one file with answers to the questions from the two cases.

You must put your complete name and a title such as Case Studies: Chapters 2 & 3 on top of your report.

Go to Item #2, which is titled, "Assignment Submission" to "Attach File." Click on the button to "Browse My Computer" for the file that you have saved to the hard drive or on a storage device such as a flash drive. Choose and click to open the file. Under File Name, you should find the file that you have just opened. Use the Submit button on the bottom/top right hand corner to send the file.
