Problem statement: An equimolar mixture of carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is formed in an industrial process, and a distillation column is used to separate them. The distillation column receives this feed at a flowrate of 30 mol/s. The top product should have 97mol% CS2, and the bottom product should have 4mol% CS2. The feed enters the column at 30 oC. Pressure = 1 atm.

Determine:

a)      Number of real trays required if reflux ratio is twice the minimum reflux ratio (using Hysys).

HINTS:

For hand calculations: the parameters required for q value calculation (e.g. latent heat of vaporization of feed) and the equilibrium (x-y) diagram needs to be obtained from Hysys. For column diameter and tray spacing, refer to Chapter 4 in the book and Appendix E. You will need average density, viscosity, surface tension, etc. You can take the average of their values at top and bottom trays. Ideal gas law can be used for vapor phase if required. Any such assumption should be mentioned clearly and with justification in the report. In Hysys: to find the number of trays, create the process using Simulation → Column → Short Cut Distillation.
