Q - When learning a foreign language, how important is to learn about the cultural elements where the language is spoken? Research the topic. Give real life examples?A - I believe it is beyond important, it is necessary! Every one has given some great examples. I was thinking that of all the places I have been to food seems to be huge in all cultures. I would say if you know how to respect people, can listen to and appreciate their music and understand the different things they eat or do not eat then you're starting off pretty good. So most of my examples have to do with food. I love to eat which is pretty great for how petite how I am!In Africa my friends and I were told that we were going to be served one of their extremely ritzy dishes. Among some of the unknown things on the plate there was a chickens a foot. It is considered rude in Africa to not eat everything on your plate. Especially something that either cost a lot or take a great deal of time to make. In China we went to a house for dinner as well. They served buffet style. I accidentally dropped something from the main serving pan on the table when I was trying to move it to my plate. I went to move it on to my plate but was stopped by our interpreter who said that was considered rude. If I had tried to take it off the table and put it on my plate they would think that I was saying I thought them poor and could not afford to get more. (I'm pretty wiped from work so let me know if this isn't making sense). Oh and the only reason why I've been to these places is because I went to a missionary school for an Assemblies of God church. Pretty cool that I got to travel so much. But my favorite was in Mexico. I hate goat cheese and to them it's a "delicacy". Yuck! Again they are offended if you do not eat everything on your plate.
