Rapid changes in information technology go hand-in-hand with progress in quality health care delivery, nursing practice, and interdisciplinary team collaboration. The following are only a few examples of how the health care field uses technology to provide care to patients across multiple settings: Patient monitoring devices. Robotics. Electronic medical records. Data management resources. Ready access to current science. Technology is essential to the advancement of the nursing profession, maintaining quality care outcomes, patient safety, and research.*** ***Select a single direct or indirect patient care technology that is relevant to your current practice or of interest to you. Direct patient care technologies require an interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. Nurses use direct patient care technologies every day when delivering care to patients. Electronic thermometers or pulse oximeters are examples of direct patient care technologies. Indirect patient care technologies, on the other hand, are those employed on behalf of the patient. They do not require interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. A handheld device for patient documentation is an example of an indirect patient care technology. Examples of topics to choose from for your annotated bibliography include: Delivery robots. Electronic medication administration with barcoding. Electronic clinical documentation with clinical decision support. Patient sensor devices/wireless communication solutions. Real-time location systems. Telehealth. Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing

Telehealth is an indirect technological patient care practice that utilizes the technology of digital communication and information technology to allow patients to access health care from remote areas. The technology uses devices such as mobile phones and computers to enhance communication between the patient and the healthcare providers. In some parts of the United States, there has been limited access to health due to underdevelopment and increased cost of care in those areas. Telehealth technology is being introduced in these areas as a current technology that will allow the provision of healthcare to community members through digital gadgets. Developing this topic would help bring to light why telehealth technology should be the next big thing for the advancement of healthcare. In order to get access to the research resources, healthcare-related research databases were accessed through NHS Learner Success Lab. These databases include PubMed, Cochrane, UpToDate, EMBASE, and PubMed Central. The keywords used during the search include “telemedicine,” “telehealth,” “remote healthcare access,” and “telehealth trends,” among others. 28074 results were found in PubMed. I used an advanced research tool to limit the scope of the studies to peer review and those within five years age limit. 16996 results were obtained. Articles with open views were selected, and the total research amounted to 83 articles. Selection was done depending on article relevance, which led to choice of four articles.

Doraiswamy, S., Abraham, A., Mamtani, R., & Cheema, S. (2020). Use of Telehealth. During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Scoping Review. Journal of medical Internet research, 22(12), e24087. https://doi.org/10.2196/24087

This article is research on telehealth applications during the period of Covid-19. Doraiswamy et al. state that Covid-19 has disrupted social and economic activities worldwide, affecting over 37.8 million people and causing more than one million deaths. As a result, holistic approaches to ensure that people can still receive care have been witnessed, with telehealth being among the first technologies to rise and expand during this period. Doraiswamy et al. conduct a systematic review to examine the effectiveness of telehealth applications during the Covid-19 pandemic. The source examines articles relating to telehealth development during the period of the pandemic. These researches are used to evaluate the effect of telehealth applications during a moment where the presence of a lethal disease has challenged healthcare provision. This article indicates that telehealth was used in different forms of healthcare provision, including clinical care, follow-up, health communication, research, medical education, and surveillance. These are indicators that telehealth technology has been used to sustain healthcare systems during a period where social contact and interaction have been prohibited. Such means that telehealth has been used as the main verse of providing care while at the same time increasing the effectiveness and protection of patients during the pandemic. From this perspective, telehealth has been attributed to the provision of care and protection for both patient and healthcare provider, ensuring continued healthcare provision and access, and reducing costs associated with physical healthcare access. Thus, telehealth had played one of the most important parts in ensuring that sanity had remained in healthcare provision during a moment when access to healthcare was almost impossible due to the pandemic.

 Kruse, C. S., Krowski, N., Rodriguez, B., Tran, L., Vela, J., & Brooks, M. (2017). Telehealth and patient satisfaction: a systematic review and narrative analysis. BMJ Open, 7(8), e016242. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2017-016242

Kruse et al. the interrelationship between telehealth and patient satisfaction. In this article, the interconnectedness between patients and healthcare providers through telehealth is the main determiner of the patient`s level of satisfaction with the healthcare system. The authors state that the use of telehealth in the United States has been increasing steadily due to its ability to provide high-quality care. The article is a study done through a meta-analysis and systematic reviews through databases such as CINAHL and MEDLINE. The study`s results indicated a connection between patient satisfaction and the modality of telehealth. The application of telehealth strategies in patient treatment enhances the chances of successful treatment and high-quality healthcare. Through these findings, the source becomes evidence that telehealth technology is beneficial in the process of healthcare provision as it promotes patient satisfaction, which is a requirement for successful care provision and quality healthcare delivery. Therefore, the application of telehealth in different care provision areas would prove effective due to increasing evidence on how telehealth improves patient satisfaction and the quality of healthcare provided.

Mahoney M. F. (2020). Telehealth, Telemedicine, and Related Technologic Platforms: Current Practice and Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Journal of wound, ostomy, and continence nursing : official publication of The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society47(5), 439–444. https://doi.org/10.1097/WON.0000000000000694

Mahoney examines the application of telehealth during the Covid-19 pandemic. The author states that the emergence of Covid-19 has forced administrators to adopt telemedicine strategies that would help deliver WOC nurse services. The pandemic crisis accelerated the need to use telehealth services, which has required healthcare providers to re-imagine strategies to ensure continuous care. The article provides that through a mobile application, the work of the patient and the healthcare provider has been reduced to a mere interaction, which enables quality care provision at a minimum cost. Telehealth is a part of digital health that ensures current technology is applied during the process of healthcare provision. Although telehealth is faced with some challenges, such as location and education barriers, its application has been so far successful, especially in dealing with the environment created by Covid-19.

Manocchia A. (2020). Telehealth: Enhancing Care through Technology. Rhode Island medical journal (2013), 103(1), 18–20. http://rimed.org/rimedicaljournal/2020/02/2020-02-18-telehealth-manocchia.pdf

Manocchia seeks to investigate the significance of two-way electronic audiovisual health communication in the United States. The author provides that telehealth is used to deliver various healthcare services, including consultation, education, care management, diagnosis, and patient self-management. The article states that the application of telehealth in healthcare has increased the impact of healthcare provision by ensuring that people with limited healthcare access have a chance to enjoy healthcare similar to others. According to Manocchia, telehealth has been attributed to increased intimacy in the relationship between the patient and the healthcare provider. Telehealth keeps them connected through regular communication during healthcare service provision. Therefore, the use of telehealth has been attributed to positive results emerging from the process of care provided through the technology.

Conclusion

The use of telehealth as a form of healthcare technology has successfully increased a conducive and enabling environment for healthcare provision and development. The use of this technology can be recommended in most healthcare facilities, especially during the current period of the Covid-19 pandemic. Organizations may influence the implementation of these factors through factors such as training, the presence of equipment, and the motivation of healthcare providers to work through telehealth (Doraiswamy et al., 2020). Implementing this technology is of benefit to healthcare providers and patients, which makes it necessary to apply in healthcare provision
