Read the article "Towards an Ethics of Creative Sound". Post your 250-500 word response, using the questions below as a guide.

• Discuss the distinction between "sound" and "a sound," and provide an example from your personal experience. How does this distinction become important for Andean?  
• Andean lists three distinct ethical dimensions to interrogate artists' use of sonic material--Awareness, Sensitivity, and Responsibility. Discuss these three categories, questions you could ask related to these categories, and how you can use them to make judgments about the use of sounds in music.
• Discuss Andean's question on p. 177: Where does the artist's responsibility for a symbol end? What is your responsibility as a listener? 

Bring two songs to class: one tune that uses a sample, and the "original" tune that the sample was from. If you need help finding tunes that have been sampled or that use samples, check the website WhoSampled (http://www.whosampled.com/).
