Immigration Legislation and the Impact on Students in Public Schools

Many educational policies that are centered around children of immigrants, mainly focus on public childhood programs. Approximately 42% of these funds come from the early childhood programs. Many children off immigrants qualify for these childhood programs if they meet some economic criteria or if they speak a language other than English. Former President Barack Obama attempted to help create a universal package for all four-year old’s to attend preschool, but that fell short in that there was no central regulation to push this legislation through. There are programs to help students that are “at risk”, but this is misunderstood to serve as an intervention rather than enriching the student’s academic achievements (Adair, 2016, p.3). There does not seem to be any definite programs that help assist children of immigrants and that needs to change soon so that everyone can achieve academic success on the same playing field.

How Education Leaders Should Help Students of Illegal Immigrants Succeed in School

The Case Study done in our book involving Christina Kamau was a phenomenal read in learning about her travels and school experiences. I learned through this that education leaders should take the time to get to know their students of where they come from, what their family heritage/culture is like, and find ways to help there students succeed in and out of the classroom. Sometimes people tend to judge others without getting to know the individual, and that is what educators and students need to understand. Educators need to have patience in understanding there students and finding programs or interventions that will help immigrant students succeed in school. There needs to be a trust between the student and the educators that will allow the student to feel comfortable and excited about being in school. When the student feels comfortable they will open up more and work harder. Christina said that many people dream of being here in the US and the fact that she had the opportunity to be here, she said she was not going to waste that opportunity (Bode and Nieto, 2018, p. 286). Education Leaders should never give up on any student, but rather be patient and understanding.
