The discussion topic this week focuses on social issues of colonization, racism, immigration, and adaptation. Consider and respond to the following. Be sure to draw from and cite required readings as well as your own personal and professional experiences and other sources of knowledge.

Discussion #1 Describe the application of community psychology action and research tools to address issues related to colonization, racism, immigration or adaptation within a global context.

This is just a discussion post but it does need to be clear, short and good with references I am including our text but I need a few more references and please place them at the bottom…

According to Birman & Bray the history of humanity has been characterized by migration, the current movement of people around the world is unprecedented in pace and scope.  Taking an ecological approach to immigration has focused on problems experienced by individual immigrants, highlighting the struggles they face, which can sometimes be a small view of the actual circumstances faced.  In response to this the Ecological Acculturation Framework (EAF) was created to better attend to the issues that come about and affect what immigrants go through. This statement alone triggered thoughts of our present day immigration laws and the separation of families we are seeing everyday on the news.  From an Ecological perspective the question of who immigrants are stems upon not only the backgrounds and experiences of the immigrants but how the receiving country perceives them. 

The application of community psychology action and research regarding immigration, can be described through Bronfenbrenner’s theory that further explains human behavior as always happening somewhere in some way that shapes how it is expressed, but still fails to explain what immigrants go through.  Therefore, the EAF shows the correlation between multiple cultures and how they influence one another.  Although this theory explains immigrant experiences, the ecological perspective developed in community psychology provides a more detailed systemic perspective on human behavior (Birman & Bray, 2017).

Community psychologists address immigration through cultural frameworks and has increasingly used social constructionist approaches that stress the perceptions of reality through cultural frameworks (Birman & Bray, 2017).  From a global view, an ecological perspective, a constructionist epistemology, and the values of diversity and social justice form a perspective on immigration that avoids a deficit view of individuals (Birman & Bray 2017).  This really seeks to understand and give context, evaluates circumstances of oppression, as well as intervening by attempting to create a fair society.

We are seeing racism and discrimination more and more now-a-days towards individuals that are coming to our towns. People are becoming more and more ignorant just because of our religion, nationality, race, or just by the way that we look. We are judging people without getting to know who they are or what they are about. Humans are scared to go outside of their comfort zone and get to know a culture. Birman and Bray (2017) describe several problems that immigrants face while attempting to assimilate into a new culture. They stated that individuals are discovering who they are now and how that fits with who they used to be.  I have a client who came from Puerto Rico and they are having a hard time adjusting to the area because of how the people are acting towards them. Many individuals are giving them dirty looks or are acting like they don’t belong because they do not know English very well.  The family came over due to the father being stationed over here and he wanted to be in a small safe town. Mom and the children are having a hard time because they are being called names.

The best approach to helping this family would be the ameliorative approach. This would give the chance to help these families by enhancing their self esteem and providing them with a support group. The family could look for a support group around the area that are for minority families.  Community Psychologists attempting to obtain a better insight into marginalized populations might look for opportunities to immerse themselves in such populations’ environment on a daily basis (Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010). To see what is needed for the family we must immerse ourselves in their culture. We will gain a better understanding on what is needed for the family and how to help them in the community if we understand them better. Educating ourselves about ones culture is what is needed for CP to help their clients.
