QUESTION

sociology unit 3

Because deviance is culturally relative and standards change over time, the definition of deviance also changes from generation to generation. Not all acts that are considered deviant are also considered a crime, however. Many are simply culturally taboo.

Consider the decade in which you were born. Identify one behavior today that we accept as normal, but would have been considered deviant in the decade you were born. For example, if you were born in 1915 and you were female, it would have been considered deviant for you to vote. Women did not get the right to vote until 1920.

  • Identify the behavior.
  • Identify how the behavior was viewed in the decade you were born. Compare to todayĆ¢s view of the behavior.
  • Which elements of culture have changed and affected the deviance level of this behavior?
  • Why was there a change in these elements of culture?
