Some say "asymmetrical warfare" is a legitimate tactic when used by those who are oppressed by a group or government to overcome that persecution.

Along that train of thought, we all have heard the term, "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."  One example might be the American Revolutionary War. Some say the American Revolutionaries who fought the Revolutionary War against England were "Freedom Fighters" who used the tactic of asymmetrical warfare in their winning effort against the British.

Others (the British for one) might say the American Revolutionaries were "terrorists" (even though the word didn't exist then (1793-1794) in that they used what was considered guerrilla tactics to defeat the British.
