The Activity Series for Metals, shown below, indicates metals that can reduce metal cations. For this table, the metals listed on the left of the table will reduce the metal cations located below it on the right. Conversely, metal cations will oxidize solid metals that are above it on the left.

Examples: ZnCl2(aq) + Mg(s) → MgCl2(aq) + Zn(s)

Pb(s) + 2 AgNO3(aq) → Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2 Ag(s)

Question: Based on the Activity Series for Metals shown above, write the balanced chemical equation for what would happen if you poured concentrated hydrochloric acid down a drain made out of iron. What would happen if you poured the acid down a drain made of copper? Why?
