Air Freight Vs Sea Freight

When it comes to life or even any form of business, one is faced with various choices that they should make decisions pertaining to them (Poirier et.al, 2009). As such, when it comes to the selection of the best mode of international transportation similar choices ought to be made. First and foremost is the need of considering the cost of transportation of both air and sea freight. In most instances, air travel may be more expensive in relation to using sea freight.  Despite this assumption, it important for one to consider other additional charges that come along with either means such as customs and destination fees.

Another factor that firms should be able to keep in mind is the speed between the two modes of transportation. Obviously, air freight is faster than sea freight and thus if a firm wishes to have its goods delivered faster, then it could opt for air transportation.  According to (Poirier et.al, 2009) reliability is another vital element that should be considered in terms if how we look at people, organizations, products as well as services.  Here, air freight has a much higher reliability as compared to that of sea freight. Last but not least is the environmental impact factor that answers the question on convenience. Here firms should be able to relook at their choice of transportation and how it affects the environment. The best way of handling such dilemma is going for the best environmental sound and sustainable approach.

When doing business domestically, it is a lot more easier then doing it on a global level. When you do it on a global level, you have to factor in intermodal transportation and which transportation method is the best route. I have an online business and most of my suppliers are overseas. When making a decision about what is the standard transportation for that product, I think about the value of the product. When the product is super cheap, then customers are looking for a bargain so I use the sea freight method and when they cost a lot, that means the customer is more invested in it making me go with air freight for better quality service. What do you think will become the more important mode in the future the way  technology is growing?

Great post, most companies have to make a choice as to how they need their freight transported. You mention that cost is one of the most considered options when deciding which mode to use, however, an article that I read mentioned that some companies will utilize air freight regardless of cost, the reasoning for this is that a company wants to push out their product during peak seasonal sales. I believe that sea transport is probably one of the best options, not only is it environmentally friendly but also the freight will not be handled nearly as much as air freight. Which mode of International transport would you say is the most reliable?

Great post.  You really looked at it from all angles and indeed the best choice is environmentally sound and sustainable.  I have rarely if ever sent anything by sea, and am mainly an air freight type of guy.  Being overseas for soon to be 23 years is probably a great reason why.  I do know that not everything can go by sea or air, however being stationed overseas does have issues of its own.  It is amazing how many companies/manufacturers will not ship to an APO address.  What is even more interesting is that it is as simple as going to your local US Post Office... Great read sir.
