The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on your personal philosophy of nursing that you have developed through your nursing program and how you will use your philosophy to deliver care to your patients.

Following this assignment, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify theories or elements that influence practice and personal nursing philosophy.
  2. Discuss the conceptualization of nursing
  3. Evaluate personal beliefs, values, and assumptions of nursing.
  4. Compare previous perspectives of nursing to present perspectives.
  5. Use scholarly written communication to share belief system.

Directions

Prepare a 2-page paper (not including title or reference pages) describing your philosophy of nursing and how you anticipate it will inform and impact the care you give as a nurse. This paper is intended to be your own thoughts on your personal philosophy and therefore, first person is allowed for this paper. The paper should include a cover page and a reference page, using all elements of APA style and grammar, as well as level headings if needed.  A minimum of one recent (last 5 years) scholarly reference are to be cited. References that are used for this paper should be paraphrased rather than using direct quotes from the source. Make sure that your writing is clear and precise, ending with a well-thought-out conclusion. The paper should be submitted in the Philosophy Paper assignment drop box in Canvas.  

Address the following questions when writing your philosophy of nursing:

  1. What does nursing mean to you?
  2. What is your view of nursing now that you are at the end of your nursing program? How has your view changed since the beginning of your nursing program?
  3. How will your view of nursing guide the care you give to your patients?
  4. What are your definitions of health and illness?
  5. Which nursing theorist or nursing theory helped you define your philosophy of nursing?
  6. How would you articulate your nursing philosophy to someone else? Consider how your philosophy makes you stand out from your colleagues.
