  6. Find 4 articles from a newspaper or news magazine about a current topic of your choice (ideally your current event, topic or article should be dated within the past two weeks).
  7. Wikipedia, blogs, twitter feeds or social media pages are NOT acceptable as your primary sources.
  8. Your issue and target audience should be approved by instructor. Reach out to instructor if you’re having a hard time finding a topic, issue and/or belief.
  9. Read through the research (feel free to use a reading log to take notes) and summarize them in your own words.
  10. Identify what research will help you with what points/claims.
  11. Review the different outline formats available for persuasive speeches.
  12. Select the best outline format to use in helping you identify the most logical pattern to use based on the purpose of your argument.
  13. Provide in-text citations while creating your outline.
  14. Feel free to use no more than TWO 3 x 5 notecards as speaking notes (as needed)
  15. Submit the outline for submission on speech day (online).
  16. Recor/submit your speech on your assigned day (including oral citations)
  17. You must cite (use as a reference) at least 4 (FOUR) different sources of evidence.  Of your 4 sources, at least 2 (TWO) must be dated within the last year.  These sources must be orally cited in your speech, and included in a Works Cited section in your preparation outline. You may use only ONE (1) “internet-only” source.
  18. You must have an introduction with all five (5) components, three main points, and a full conclusion. Each main point has two sub points.  The evidence should be complete (as many sentences as needed) and have an in-text citation.
  19. The most important part of this speech is your original and innovative plan.  Your goal is to win audience support for your project. You must provide substantial detail about your plan design, implementation, and results. This section may have less cited evidence than other sections, as it is your own creation, but should still offer excellent support and a projection of your plan’s results.
  20. Use full sentences throughout the outline.  Run spell check when you are done.
  21. Allow plenty of time for the research, outline writing, and speech preparation.  The outline alone will take several hours to put together – don’t wait until the day before.
