Numerical Memory Activity - Digit Span Task
If you are like most individuals, you can remember from 5 to 9 numbers. On the average most individuals can remember 7 pieces or chunks of information in their short term memory. Many of you have chunked numbers together based on some association - such as birth dates. This allowed you to recall more information. For instance, instead of remembering the individual letters: C I A P H D N B A C B S you could have chunked them together - CIA PHD NBA CBS. Rather than memorizing 12 individual bits, you only had to remember four chunks. Based upon data like this, it is not surprising that we use 7 digit phone numbers, as most humans would have trouble remembering longer phone numbers. When you do this task, you will probably notice that you encoded the information acoustically in both the auditory and visual parts of the experiment; that is, you repeated the numbers to yourself or out loud until you were asked to recall them.
question :
- List and describe the independent and dependent variables in this experiment.
- What is your hypothesis? Why is this your hypothesis? (Remember: A good hypothesis should make a prediction about how the independent variable will affect the dependent variable.)
- What were your results? Did you do better in the auditory or visual presentation condition? Did you use chunking to help you remember the digits? Explain.
