"Perhaps, the most important technical feature to learn in the course, is the concept of "cookies" . We briefly discussed this important notion in our first week.

Two ideas are important here. Functionality and privacy. The first, refers to this very useful feature of tracking user surfing/navigational behaviour. The second has to do with privacy. To what extent keeping records of consumer, consented or not, is ethical or even legal. 

Here is an entry, by the FASKEN Institute on the topic. It provides a definition of cookies, and presents and assessment of the privacy situation in Canada .
