urpose:  The purpose of this project is to reinforce the learning outcomes of this course which are to:

  • Develop skills in systematically evaluating a crime scene;
  • Apply the concepts of direct and circumstantial evidence to items at a crime scene;
  • Develop skills for properly recording, documenting, marking and collecting evidence;
  • Explain the basic capabilities of crime labs and technical services;
  • Develop knowledge and skill of specialized investigative techniques related to specific crimes;
  • Develop professionalism in communications in connection with criminal investigations;
  • Recognize and discuss ethical considerations in criminal investigations;
  • Prepare a case for court

Requirements:  

  1. Select a high profile criminal case to conduct further research on.  Choose a criminal case that interests you.  Examples include, but are not limited to:  O.J. Simpson, Jeffrey MacDonald, Casey Anthony, Jodi Arias, etc. 
  2. Locate at least five (5) references (using the LRC) that discuss your case and/or investigative procedures.
  3. Answer the following questions about the case:
    1. what was the case about?
    2. who were the victim(s) and suspect(s)?
    3. what was the major evidence in the case?
    4. what forensic experts, if any, testified?
    5. what were the key points of the prosecution’s case?
    6. what were the key points of the defense’s case?
    7. what was the final verdict?
    8. If guilty, what was the final sentence? 
  4. Present your findings about the case in one of three formats:  a research paper, a slide presentation, or a short video clip (feel free to be creative!). 

This assignment will be broken down into the following four parts with the respective due dates listed below:

LRC Project Part 1 (10 points)

Select your criminal case and your final format.  Due Week 3

LRC Project Part 2 (20 points)- 

Submit your reference page in proper APA formatting.  Due Week 5

LRC Project Part 3 (20 points)- 

Submit a rough draft of your LRC Project.  Due Week 7

LRC Final Project (Part 4, 150 points)- Submit your Final LRC Project.  Due Week 9

NOTE:  This LRC Project is worth a total of 200 points (20%) of your overall grade. 

Special Instructions:

You may choose one out of three formats for your assignment:

  • Research paper: (This should consist of a Title page, 4 to 6 double spaced pages, and a Reference page)
  • Slide Presentation (Prezi or MS Power Point): (This should consist of a Title slide, 4 to 6 slides of material, a Reference slide, detailed speaker’s notes in the note section and colorful clip art or photos that represent your case).
  • Short Video: (This should consist of 10 to 15 minute visual presentation that introduces you, your case, and the questions listed below)

Be sure to use APA formatting and cite all your references, regardless of the final format you choose.
