Watch the following short video from Treaty 3 elder and knowledge keeper, Robert Greene.

After watching the video, share your initial reaction to the video (length is up to you).

Next, pick out something and write a reaction to Anishinaabe life before the Treaty Three agreement.

All across Indigenous lands, Indigenous Peoples had thriving and sophisticated governance systems.  In the video, elder Greene shared his knowledge about the Anishinaabeg in Treaty 3 and Anishinaabe governance systems - economics, cultural, and spiritual systems.  Every spring chiefs/leaders from 25 different Anishinaabe communities, sat together and discussed everything that was happening in their home communities.  Here is a map which shows how large and vast a territory this is:

These chosen chiefs / leaders set out policies - a few examples were policies about the water, the river systems, hunting, trapping and fishing areas.  Why would this be important to establish?

Elder Greene also talked about justice and how Anishinaabe laws are embedded within Anishinaabemowin - the Anishinaabe language.  An example of this is the word miinigowiziwin (mii-ni-go-wi-zi-win)  which loosely translates as all of the gifts given by Creator.  This includes land, culture, language, values, teachings and history.

Miinigowiziwin is the word that the Anishinaabe elders used when discussing the laws the Creator gave to the people… The Creator’s laws were given to the people to ensure that they live a balanced life.  Here is a link so that you can listen to the roots of that word - miinigoowizi which roughly translates as "she/he receives/is given a gift (from Creator). https://ojibwe.lib.umn.edu/main-entry/miinigoowizi-vai

Truly understanding Indigenous perspectives during the treaty era has to include Indigenous languages!  Why do you think this is rarely - if ever - talked about?

Next - pick out something from the video that resonated with you Treaty 3 life after Treaty 3 and write about this.

There is no minimum writing length to your responses in this extra credit assignment - just answer the bolded questions!  And do not write a summary of the video!!  Engage with the knowledge shared by Elder Greene and respond.

This extra credit assignment is due by July 9th.  Submit your response in the text submission area provided.
