QUESTION

Week 2

Part 1- APA Format- 200-300 words

Sentence Structure and In-Text Citation

Forum Goal: Read an article and provide a textual example within your initial response

Read “Once More to the Lake” by E. B. White, pp. 97-100, and “Androgynous Man” by Noel Perrin, pp. 243-244. Select one of the pieces to write about.

Both of these stories involve trips or vacations, time spent away from the author’s everyday environment. Both deal with memory and growing up.

Take a look at how the author uses sentences to give details of the vacation or the trip. Are the sentences long, short, poetic, matter of fact?

Then write about whether you think the author is successful in creating an interesting or moving piece about memory. What makes the writing successful for you?

Select a favorite sentence from the piece and include it, like this:

“I read all the interesting articles in a couple of magazines I had, and then I went back and read all the dull stuff."

Why is it a favorite for you? What was your reaction when you read it, and how did the author evoke that reaction?

Initial posts should be at least 200- 300 words.

Part 2- APA Format- 250-300 Words

This is a role playing forum. Read through the case below and follow the directions.

The 1000 acre question.

Current mayor Pat faced a difficult challenge. When the last member of the Ulmus family passed away last week they left their beautiful 1000 acre forest to the town of Wilton. When that happened, Pat Smith was suddenly a mayor and forest manager. The Ulmus family maintained a certified American Tree Farm that bordered the town. The trees are visible from the windows of town hall. Their fall colors contributing to the beautiful backdrop featured on the town post card. Pat swam in the ponds in the Ulmus forest as a kid. The Ulmus family had always allowed town residents to recreate in the part of the forest that bordered the town.  Some town residents a few decades back even worked with the Ulmus family to put in a nice walking trail that featured a couple of benches and was popular with town residents.

The land was not donated as part of a conservation easement or trust. Wilton is not a town with great economic means to maintain the land. When the Bass shoe company left town in 1998 the town hit difficult financial times. Wilton already has some beautiful parks including Kineowatha Park which is 62 acres that has a public beach on Wilson Lake.  The year round town population has been in decline while second home owners are starting to increase.  Revenue for the local schools and public services overall though has been declining. This donation of land could be an economic burden or an economic bonus. Pat decides to call in some experts to hear their opinions on what to do with this 1,000 acre gift. A town hall meeting has been called and the experts are coming to present ideas to the citizens of Wilton.
