Theme 1: Companies need to make money to stay in business.  The leader in the organization is to create a vision and mission.  The vision and mission drives decision making in the organization so that resources of the organization, including human resources, are used properly to make financial sustainability happen.

    Purpose:

    The purpose of this project is to use research skills to gather information on two business leaders to gain an understanding of how each leader views the role of leadership in an organization, how each approaches the creation and implementation of a vision and mission and develops the organization to cultivate leaders.

    Skill Building:

    You are also completing this project to help you develop the skills of critical thinking, teamwork, writing, using primary and secondary research and creating a presentation in PowerPoint.

    This project is the second of three group projects. Members of the team will collaborate acting as a self-managed team.  As a self-managed team, members take a collective responsibility for ensuring the team operates effectively, sets team goals, manages time, makes decisions and solve problems, communicates frequently and clearly, and meets the deadline.   You may have team members that are located all over the world.  Working in a virtual environment should not stop the self-managed team from being successful in reaching the final goal. All work must appear in the Group area.

    Team Responsibilities

    As a self-managed team, the following is the work for which team members are responsible:

    • setting goals
    • determining roles and responsibilities for each team member
    • actively participating and communicating in the Group area of the classroom
    • completing the agreed upon work prior to the deadline
    • resolving problems and issues among the team members
    • agreeing on a final product as a team (consensus decision making)
    • submitting the final product into the Assignment Folder (all students will submit into the Assignment Folder)

    Collaboration starts by having one member of the team go into the Group area and create two new threads:

    Under the first thread, your team will set goals, determine the roles and responsibilities of each team member, determine a schedule for communication, set deadlines (do not set the deadline for the last day), and any other needed schedule to complete the task. 

    Post your work from weeks 3, 4, and 5 into the second thread. You will discuss the critical information from the templates along with the instructions below to create a PowerPoint presentation.

    Deliverable Due Date

    Your team is responsible for posting this deliverable in the Assignment Folder at the end of week 3, Sunday, 11:59 p.m. EST.

    Your team will use the Group area of the Discussion area.  Click on Discussions on the main navigation bar and scroll down until you see your group area.  All work will be done in this area.

    Grades

    All students on the team will receive the same grade unless a member fails to participate or does not carry his or her weight in completing the project.  These students will receive a zero or a reduced grade depending on the level of participation and contribution to the team project.  

    Team Composition

    Teams can consists of 2, 3 or 4 students but should not consists of more than four students.  Team members are responsible for completing the project even if a team member does not fulfill his or her obligation of submitting the agreed upon work.  The project cannot be completed individually and students cannot choose to create teams other than those created by the instructor.  If a team member does not hear from any other member, it is important to reach out to the instructor.

    Late Assignments

    If the project is submitted after the due date, the Late Assignment policy is applicable.  No extensions beyond the due date is given to teams.

    Peer Evaluation

    At the end of the project, each team member will complete a Peer Evaluation Form.  If you fail to complete the form, a zero will be assigned as the grade.  Each member should complete the Peer Evaluation Form accurately to reflect the level of work performed.

    Instructions:

    This assignment has been designed for you to examine the way successful leaders view the job of the leader in the context of creating a vision, mission and strategic thinking within an organization

    Step 1:  Leader Selection

    All team members will discuss the following leaders and come to a consensus on the two selected leaders.  Then, one member of the team will go into the Group area and create a thread entitled, Leader Selection by Wednesday of week 3.

    Step 2:  PowerPoint Elements

    The PowerPoint presentation will include the elements listed below. 

    • Identify the two leaders and provide facts about the leader related to the position and the name of the organization at which he or she works;
    • Discuss how each leader views the role of leadership in an organization and what a leader's job entails;
    • Discuss how the leader approaches vision and mission creation;
    • Discuss how the leader seeks to implement the vision and mission within the organization;
    • Discuss and explain how the leader develops his or her organization to cultivate leaders and its talents;
    • Explain how the two leaders use strategic thinking to arrive at decisions and create a future for the organization;
    • Use the Speaker Notes Section of the PowerPoint to present the analysis. 

    The presentation will not include:

    • A description of the companies in which the leaders operate or why what they do is successful.
    • What others say about the leader’s leadership skills and abilities!
    • A string of quotes or cited material to answer the elements above. 

    Step 3:  Research

    The group will do extensive research on the two leaders using primary and secondary source material.  Primary sources is an original source that includes an eyewitness account, document, video, speeches, interview, podcasts, survey, statistical data, direct knowledge of a situation, Internet communication, blogs, listservs, news article, or legal document.  A secondary source include scholarly journals, newspapers, articles that discusses or assesses primary sources. 

    For this project, the use of primary sources will have a focus on gaining an understanding of each leaders’ perspective on leadership and on the job of the leader.  The use of primary source material is required for this project.

    Collection of Information:

    To help you collect information from your research, use the Leadership Template to fill in information about each leader.  You will see there are two tabs, one for each leader.  Once the research is done, you are ready to collaborate as a team and determine what information to use in the PowerPoint presentation. Remember, you are creating slides and a Speaker Notes Section.  The Speaker Notes Section is used for the analysis.  Both the slides and Speaker Notes Section must be used to do well on the project.

    Step 4:  Creating the PowerPoint Presentation

    Your team will want to discuss the information that each student presented on the Leadership Template .  It is likely that members of a team have found some of the same information.  This is probably a good sign.  However, keep referring back to the required elements to ensure the information found in the research process fits the project.

    Slides:  You will discuss one leader and move on to discuss the second leader.  Although you may provide a picture of each leader, the presentation is not a slide show of pictures so avoid cluttering the slides with pictures and images.  Think that you are submitting this presentation to managers and executives in Biotech.  You want everyone to walk away with a good impression of your work.  Start thinking of yourself as a brand that you want to promote!  The work you perform is what people will associate with you when they think of your name.  Do you want to be perceived as professional, an expert or one who cannot be taken seriously?

    Plan your slides on paper before you create them in PowerPoint.  Make sure the slides do not present information overload.  Only present the information that the audience needs to hear.  The rest will be presented in the Speaker Notes.

    Your team will determine who is creating the PowerPoint presentation.  You might want a backup plan or you want to make sure the presentation is completed prior to the due date so everyone can review and give feedback so changes can be made.

    Speaker Notes Section:  The crux of this assignment is presented in the Speaker Notes Section of the Power Point presentation.  The Speaker Notes provides the analysis, which means you will be explaining the information on the slides.  Every slide needs a Speaker Note.  The analysis has to be thoroughly presented with an explanation of ‘why and how’ that is supported by the research and course material.  Do not skimp on the support since it is needed to demonstration critical thinking and an understanding of what is presented.  It is like writing a paper but placing the analysis in the slide notes [Note:  A couple of sentences probably will not suffice as meeting the minimum on this project].

    Speaker Notes can be accessed by opening a PowerPoint presentation and clicking on Notes at the bottom of the screen on the right side.  Click into the Notes and type.  It is probably advantageous to create the narrative and copy into the Speaker Notes Section.

    The following items are required in creating the PowerPoint presentation:

    • Presentations should be no more than 15 slides, which includes a title page and reference page;
    • The names of the team members who participated in the project should be listed on the title page;
    • PowerPoint should be a basic presentation without the bells and whistles including excess graphics;
    • Use the grading rubric while completing the project to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade. 
    • Third person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing).  
    • You may not use books in completing this project.
    • Provide the page or paragraph number in every in-text citation presented. 

    Step 5:   Submit the PowerPoint Presentation in the Assignment Folder

    The assignment submitted to the Assignment Folder will be considered the team’s final product and therefore ready for grading by the instructor.  It is incumbent upon every student to verify the assignment is the correct submission.  No exceptions will be considered by the instructor).
