RE: Week 4 Discussion 1

The key factors that that create stress are physical and emotional strain to the human body.  There are many factors that contribute to stress of police officers such as frustration, family problems, threats and corruption.  Honestly there is no real way to dodge stress it happens whether we want it to or not positive or negative stress. Some just have it worst than others. One of the stress management tools that most agencies use is (EP) Employee Assistace Program which officers cope with any of the many types of stress ie. substance abuse, depression or family problems. By simply seeking a Counselor may solve some of the problem for stressful career choice. Being able to sit down and discuss whats is making them feel depressed or anxiety. Sometimes as a last resort medication is giving to help relive stress.

Higher Education is something that is necessary within the police force. Training is relevant because society is changing and in order to understand ramifications of the problems which happen in a days time continuing education is a must.

RE: Week 4 Discussion 2

In my opinion, the two most important factors to consider when law enforcement officials encounter situation with individuals who are passive resistant are:

  1. Whether the subject pose an immediate threat to the safety of Officers or others
  2. The severity of the crime

Even though these situations normally require a low level use of force, in some instances incident involving individuals who are passive aggressive can turn violent within a moment’s notice.  Law enforcement officials must be flexible and equipped to deal with any all escalating situations.  Incidents of riots have started out peaceful and the participations were passive aggressive. Due to one or two agitators, the situation becomes very dangerous for all involved and a low level use of response may have to increase to deadly force within a matter of minutes.  Police policy and procedures will dedicate how officers respond in either situation.

Miranda rights are necessary for any person(s) suspected of committing a crime.  He or she is informed that they have the right to remain silent and have legal counsel prior to questioning and can elect to discontinue the interview at anytime.  These rights are afforded to everyone and do not necessary hinder law enforcement in obtaining information to prove guilt.  A skilled interrogator is able to interview suspects of crimes and obtain admissions and confessions legally.
