What is your thought on this debate below on immediate emancipation?

My name is Melinda Monroe, and my husband owns one of the largest plantations in Atlanta; along with over 300 slaves. While it may be a little unorthodox, if not unheard of, to hear from a southern woman on the issue of emancipation, I believe I have a unique perspective on the situation. I am of the opinion that all slaves should be freed immediately and without haste. Gradual emancipation, in my opinion, is just another way of prolonging the suffering of these poor souls and gleaning every last ounce of work, dignity, and strength we can before setting them loose in a world that will continue to be harsh and cruel to them based on the color of their skin. There is the belief that blacks are unintelligent and incapable of governing themselves, but I have found just the opposite to be true. In the face of insurmountable cruelties, they have acted with more grace than any in our positions would have. This causes many to believe that this is because they have accepted their lot in life, but the opposite is true. They have families and dreams as well; and if not freed by our government, they will gain independence on their own terms; whether we like it or not. Proponents claim that an abrupt end would topple society and our economy; but I believe selfish motives are the only thing getting in the way of ending slavery. It seems to me that if negroes were allowed to work the land and make a living for their families, their productivity would increase. But what do I know? I'm just a woman.
