Ch 6

Journal -- Verbal and Non Verbal communications are symbolic; both communicate important meaning and both are governed by rules that determine particular contexts and situations. After reading the text and articles and watching the TED talk this week, please according to the prompts below:

Answer the following question:

  1. How do you value time? After exploring the Innovations International (2007) tool, are you more polychronic or monochronic in your personal cultural preferences? What did you learn from your interpretation of scores?

In addition to answering the question above, from this list below, answer one of the following questions:

  1. Thompson (2017) discusses the different ways body language can be interpreted among cultures. Understanding meaning of these nonverbal behaviors can be a challenge.  Tell me a time where you maybe your use of a nonverbal body language varied from culture to culture. Did you need crisis communication to mediate the situation? Or was it not until later that you realized the issue at hand? Explain and apply incorporating at least one term from the text into your response.
  2. Budding (2018) discusses the differences between American and Japanese Sign Language. He shows how nonverbal gestures and body language play into understand what the sender is saying, even if you do not know sign language. After watching his presentation (watch the entire video but see specifically after 7:00 minutes where he doesn't use words), how much of the presentation did you understand? What do you think he was trying to communicate to the audience? How did body language and gestures help you understand what he was saying?

Please integrate the text and the supplementary resource into each response. Cite intext using APA format. For example, both the text and Innovations International (2007) should be used in the first question.

For Ch 8: People often do not see a conflict situation in the same way. Consider the 2016 Orlando nightclub massacre:

--Some saw it as a hate crime, caused by the gunman’s anti-gay prejudice. Or as a clash of cultures and religions – U.S. (Christianity) and Islam – rejecting the anti-gay element. Others saw it as an attack on freedom of all individuals. Still others saw it as the actions of a deranged individual. The proposed solutions to the conflict –more gun control, more protection/rights for gay Americans, stricter immigration policies – depending on one’s view of the cause. I want you to reflect on your opinion on this matter. Please answer according to the prompts below:

Please answer the following question:

  1. What do you think?

From the next list, please answer one of the following questions, in addition to the question above:

  1. Do we need agreement on the causes of intercultural conflict?
  2. Is it possible to resolve intercultural conflict without this agreement?

In your response this week, please cite the text (Martin & Nakayama, 2022) and the supplementary resource in APA format. Feel free to bring in other items to further you discuss as you see fit.
