Learning is a process hence requires definite time to enhance development. The commentary will be based on the similarities of three books in literacy development among children. The different approaches in analysing development among children will be the focus of attention. Existing environments enhance learning. the surrounding determines how a child grasps basic concepts. The role of each party including teachers and parents will lay the basis of the commentary. Adams (1990) will analysis steps involve in literature development, Arnold (2003) will provide the environmental aspect of the commentary and Peccei (2006) will combine the two. The aim of the commentary will be to develop a case study using various approaches.
The three sources acknowledge the fact that earlier cognitive abilities by children are essential in future literacy development. Arnold (2003) indicates the process that enhances Harry’s cognitive ability. At this point, the mother plays an important role in ensuring Harry undergoes the learning process successfully. Adams (1990) states that, early cognitive ability determines how a child will grasp literacy concepts while in school. Adams applies the concept to a child’s earlier phonemic awareness using earlier cognitive ability. Peccei (2006) uses the cognitive ability of a given child to recognise complex structure words. The common approaches the three authors deploy relates to Piaget cognitive theory. The three concepts of the theory are visible in the books in that parents and pre-school environment are identified by the authors as Schemas. They also indicate the development of this cognitive ability through different stages before a child is enrolled into the formal educational systems.
The books however, use different writing style. Arnold (2003) uses a descriptive style where he gives a day-to-day account of Harry and hence giving the reader the ability to make a conclusion based on the events. Harry’s life events is based on observations and the author uses these events to ascertain the early cognitive ability by a child. Peccei (2006) and Adams (1990) use an analytical approach in displaying cognitive abilities among children. They both draw from existing researches to explain certain events in a given child’s life. They analyses the environment at which children would best learn their cognitive ability and focuses majorly on the literacy developmental stages. The differences in style indicate the diverse nature in which cognitive abilities are displayed and learned. Adams (1990) draws from other sources to support her argument on cognitive ability. Peccei (2006) uses other sources and own research to substantiate his argument.
In conclusion, the analysis focuses on earlier cognitive ability and it application in learning. The authors use various approaches in providing evidence and ascertain their claims. The different approaches used would be useful while developing future case studies. One may choose to use the descriptive approach by Arnold or the analytical approach by Adams in presenting a case study. The models learned from these books can be combined to provide more evidence. The planning of any assignment will be based on the three books as evidence of a given case study would be on own research or existing researches with appropriate citations being provided.
