The book reflects the cultural aspects of one particular minority that is Cherokee. This community is living in the United States for many years. The prejudice of White Americans has also been discussed in the book. Novel reflects the fact that minorities of USA have suffered a lot to achieve the status at which they are living now days. They were always regarded as second class citizens in the eyes of White Americans. The brain washing of children of White American by their parents is one of the burning issues which have been discussed in the novel. Right from the childhood children of White American is trained as a superior to his fellows belonging from minorities. This is the main reason of various conflicts happened in the past. White Americans always considered USA as their colony because of which positive relationships did not develop among different races living in the region. The history of Native Americans was not promoted by the majority living in USA. They were of the opinion that if their culture will be promoted then there is quite a chance that White Americans might not remain the influential class of the colony. Whit Americans were always of the opinion that they are the masters of that territory and Natives should serve their masters in an effective manner. The book tries to highlight the Cherokee culture which is often ignored by the mainstream novel writers. The author not only describes the historical facts but he also cherished the positive aspects of that culture. Although the efforts have been made but it is also accepted in the book that Cherokee is going towards its decay. The main focus of this book is on the education of little tree, however it is the medium by the help of which author is trying to convey its objectives that is native American culture and the hardships which they faced during 1930’s. Although most of their rights were occupied by White American, the pride of Native Americans remained unchanged. Pride was the only thing left with those people. Natives were also discouraged to participate in the economic development of the country. Majority of them were working at clerical levels. There were very few people who served as an officer during that time. Being an oppressed class it was very difficult for them to raise their voice against the ruling class of the society (Carter, 1985). The most critical and emotional part of novel is the return of little tree to his grandparents. The time period which he lived as an orphan was very tough period in his life. He faced many hardships because of which he was well aware of the culture prevailing against natives. The love which was provided by his relatives was very encouraging for him. It was the love of elders because of which he get used to his family members which were new to him. The novel is the success story in terms of removing stereotypes associated with natives. Most of the White Americans were of the opinion that Natives are quite lazy and they do not have the ability to change their economic outlook through hard work. The tag of laziness was so attached to the natives that they were not offered the jobs which require mental or extreme physical work. These were the major reasons because of which natives were left behind in the economic race. The novel condemns this mentality of White American towards minorities.
