Division among people in the society, in the 1970s is reflected in the film in several scenes. The people are divided along class and cultural differences. First there is the bridge that reflects the division among people in the society. This was an era where people of a certain class were deemed important than others. Brooklyn represents the low class people while Manhattan represents the high class people. These two are different worlds. Brooklyn is culturally conservative and economically depressed. there are few opportunities for people there to advance in life. For instance, Tony works as a painter and his role model is his coworker. There is a scene where their boss points out that he had been with him for 20 years. Manhattan, on the other hand is represented as glamorous (Driscoll 114).

The bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn symbolize the hardships that one had to surpass in order to move from one class to a higher one.
