It’s just like the mythical “Sword of Damocles” that ominously hangs over my head threatening now and then to fall on me. I have nothing else but my unwavering courage to face all odds to become a doctor of medicine ultimately.

I have come a long way, from Haiti to the United States of America (USA).

The geographical differences apart, the psychological disturbance that it has created within me is too great. I have successfully solved many problems in life to come this far and when I look back over the years spent in the USA, it produces a chill down by spine. Now I am more certain of accomplishing it all, of course an allowance must be made for lapses here and there. After all cultural inhibitions, transition worries, emotional downturn and years of anxiety are all over. Poverty, it is said, is a double edged weapon. It may cut either way. Fools succumb under its immeasurable weight while the wise use it as a source of motivation. I, unconsciously, did the latter. Abraham Lincoln (1809 – 1865), the sixteenth President of America, had not had it easy in life. Yet he not only successfully defeated the secessionist Confederate States, but also brought in the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) that led to the abolition of slavery in Europe later.

Transplanted from Haiti, a remote corner of the world, into the US at the age of sixteen, I had no apparent ambition. neither did I have the language capability to overcome the initial fear of a naïve migrant. I could, probably, have been shaken by the all too obvious handicaps- black skin and the weaker sex. I was struggling hard to feel the ropes. A rudderless ship being caught in the ebb and flow of the tide, could still find the shore when calmer waters prevail at the end.
