Artifacts (material objects) and organisms (living things) both have form and function in many instances but there is a clear distinction between these two categories in terms of their aims or purpose. Moreover, artifacts are made with the use of an external force separate from material components, meaning these objects are made by Man, unlike common organisms which develop organically all by themselves without any outside intervention. A person can study these objects or artifacts precisely because someone else made them with a purpose in mind, sometimes for a purpose that may at first glance be difficult to discern at all. This is what ethnography is about, it concerns with trying to ascribe a function to an object, which often requires a deeper study to be able to discover what these objects represent in the larger scheme of things within a society. The common everyday objects found in any society can be imbued with a significance in them due to the cultural practices and beliefs within that society, giving value to certain things and not others.

The purpose for which a specific object was made in the first place has a preconceived aim in the mind of the maker, or what can be called as a “mental model” before the object takes its actual form (Ingold, 2012, p. 370) and the accumulation of these artifacts constitute a culture composed of beliefs and practices unique to that society as imbued in its material things. This is the objective of an ethnographer, to determine the purpose of why an object was made based on studying a local culture.
