The story The Open Boat portrays four characters trapped in a boat because of shipwreck trying to get ashore. All the characters have their own personalities but collectively they struggle to depict a microcosm of society. Three of the persons aboard are successful in saving their lives but one of them gets drowned. Nature plays no role in selecting about who was appropriate to drown or not as its decisions are arbitrary.

When the rescue gainers start their journey, they are unable to know about the will of nature as the narrator says, “None of them knew the color of the sky.” (Crane 64) but they are fully aware of the circumstances in which, they are entrapped. The four men are not aware as to what nature holds for them. The story shows a mini picture of a society as on the boat, we can find leader, followers, working man, observers and thinkers, all in a small boat. All the men are supportive to one another and as per the narrator, they are with one another because, “It was more than a mere recognition of what was best for the common safety.” (Crane 68). They work as per the norms of society and fight against natural occurrences to find a refuge against their grievances. Not all of them get succeeded in saving their lives but teach a lesson that we have to struggle towards reaching our destination and leave the rest to nature.

The captain of the ship is exceedingly distressed and disconsolate because of the drowned people in the shipwreck. Other characters of the story, the oiler, the correspondent and the cook are also dejected and downtrodden but the captain being the leader considers it his failure not be able to rescue people and the ship. However, being a natural leader, he handles his responsibility even in the boat and leads people towards the right path. He fights for the safety of his companions and supports them.
