Throughout history undocumented immigrants have been flocking to America to order to allow their children to be citizens of the Unites States. Those born within the borders of the US gain citizenship through birthrights. I believe that those children should be able to become legal American citizens and have the same opportunities of those born to documented citizens of the United States. Children have no control of what they are given when they are born and some have to suffer immensely because they were born in to a country of poverty, neglect, and violence. This country was built on freedom and acceptance towards all people. In Taking Sides, Eric Foner states, "The supreme court has consistently ruled that birthright citizenship applies to every american-born child and equal protection of the laws to citizens and noncitizens alike" (298). This goes to show that under the constitution these citizens are protected. Over the years they have consistently debated this and have always overcame the issue by discussing the 14th amendment. Overall, these children should be given the equal opportunity to live a safe life in America. It is unjust and unfair to not allow these children, who were born in the united states, to gain the same freedom and equality that all other citizens are given.
