Write a 3 page essay on Delinquency Behavior among Youth and Children.

Robert Merton in his theory, “strain theory”, explained that the strains in the society make individuals and the youth to engage in antisocial behavior. Poverty is one of the strains in the society which makes the youth to adopt anti-social behavior in order to achieve value. The classical criminologists claim that the youth adopt antisocial behavior as a result as rational self-interest and not as a result of external environment. Welsh and Siegel (2014) argues that there are two types of youth offenders including repeat offenders and adolescence limited offenders. The repeat offenders start offending before adolescence and proceed to adult age while adolescence limited offenders start at adolescence but stop at the end of adolescence. Welsh and Siegel (2014) further claims that juvenile justice system does not act professionally when dealing with those two types of juvenile offenders. The justice system and juvenile courts do not consider the factors leading to before sentencing juveniles to borstal institutions (Public Safety Canada, 2013).

The society is working to prevent juvenile delinquency because it is a threat to the community development. Organizations like United Nations are working with the members of the community to eliminate some risk factors like drug abuse and early sex. The society also helps in establishing community development programs like provision of farming seeds and water projects in order to eradicate poverty and make the youth resourceful and focused (Welsh and Siegel, 2014).
