The Code of Ethics hopefully guides mental health professionals so that they understand what they need to do in most situations that may appear. In one sense it could be said that everyone has a value system and ethics that should guide them into appropriate behaviors. The reality is that people differ in their ethics and values which make the APA guidelines important to provide a baseline for everyone. Three areas that I will discuss in this writing are the areas of competence, human relations and privacy/confidentiality.
I believe that an individual should be competent in any field. Competence tome means that the individual has taken the necessary requirements for their profession and that they have experience in their field. As mental health practitioners they should have at least a Masters degree in Counseling or Social Work and have completed the amount of hours for their degree that their state requires for licensing. They should also have a license to practice because this means they provide certain skills to their clients. These credentials give the foundation for a mental health practitioner and it also insures that they continue professional development. Competence to me also means that they will adhere to the Code of Ethics for their profession and that they first and foremost will "do no harm."
The first issue is that the individual must only work within their scope of practice. This means that they must only do what they have been trained to do and not step without that framework. As an example, if an individual is only trained as a career counselor, they should stay with those types of clients. If they find someone with a mental health issue, this person should be referred to someone who is competent in those mental health issues. Yager and Bienenfeld give another example of why competence is important. In their article they questioned whether or not doctors were competent to determine the competency of residents
