Write a 3 page essay on The dancing girl of Izu by Kawabata Yasunari.

Kawabata Yasunari’s unique style of exploring loneliness and fringes of human sexuality in his stories emphasized the ugly veracities of life. Though the goal of most stories is to make us feel good and make us feel comfortable wherever we are, the goal of Yasunari’s works focuses more on disturbing us. The short novel, The Dancing Girl of Izu presents a combination of culture, family ties and young love and highlights the sentimental love story of a 20-year old college student and a young girl during their journey on the Izu Peninsula. Much to our concern, the story can be related to the present issues concerning youth nowadays as well as the tendency of adults to question the intensity of their feelings.

Notice that the story is presented in a destitute environment with which we can see and feel its dreariness. The detailed description of the story’s atmosphere, from its weather up to the gloomy and unpresentable places depicts the kind of mood that the story has as well as on its characters. We also observe how many times the words: colorless, dismal, rain and cold were used by the boy in the story. It is evident though that the boy is troubled. Lines dealt with the root cause of the young man’s plight. Growing up without a family is much too different than having one. In these lines, he stressed out that living as an orphan has forever marked a bad reputation in his life and thought that nothing and no one would ever be able to relieve his feelings of emptiness. Yet, as he heard the family of the dancing girl addressing him as a nice person, it greatly moved him. He felt much noticed and appreciated.
