You know, something else to consider when discussing controversial art is location.Consider how a bronze statue of a woman falling/jumping out the WTC might be perceived. On the West Coast, relatively far removed from the events, it might be seen more from a distance, where in NYC, especially in the Financial District, emotions might still be raw even 20 or 30 years later. Another is when was it built? Obviously less than 10 years later, when a more abstract work might have been better and more sensitive to people's feelings, whereas in say 30 or 40 years, a more realistic representation might be okay. Another is simply how realistic versus abstract it is in its symbolism and representation -- the more realistic, the more problematic the closer in time and location. Can you think of other factors which might affect how controversial art is received and judged?
