Sigmund Freud came up with the term Oedipus complex to describe the idea that a child has an unconscious sexual desire for the parent of the opposite sex. His theory further states that a child will be envious of the same sex parent because of this. On a very broad interpretation of what occurs in the play, this is in fact what happens. Oedipus kills his father and later is wed to his mother, not consciously aware that it was his father he killed or his mother he wed. With that being said, Oedipus actually felt that his adoptive parents were his real parents and did everything in his power to make sure the prophecy did not come true with them. He did not suffer from the Oedipus complex the way Freud defined it. His actions were not done knowingly and therefore could not have been because of sexual desire and envy. Not to mention, when he figured out what he had done, he was very remorseful and went as far as gouging his own eyes out in regret. Other famous literary works that utilize the Oedipus complex are Hamlet by William Shakespeare and Sons and Lovers by D.H. Lawrence.
