BIOL 2010, Anatomy and Physiology I

Case Study: Cell Metabolism F18

You are working as a personal trainer and one of your clients asks you what "anaerobic" means and how it is that different foods can be "burned for energy".  You decide to explain to them the overall processes of cell metabolism. Answer the following questions as if you were explaining these processes to your client.

1. Consider the cellular metabolism of carbohydrates

a. Write the equation for the respiration of glucose:

b. How many ATP are produced from one molecule of glucose during complete aerobic respiration? (see notes and page 916).

2. In the space below, Diagram the 3 major stages of the cellular respiration of glucose. Start with glucose and then list, in order, these three stages. Once you have this outline in place, add in the following details:

a. Note where all ATP are used or produced, including the total numbers of each from each stage

b. Note how the intermediate molecules of pyruvate and acetyl are used within this process.

c. Note where all of the NADH and FADH are produced and where they are used to make ATP.

d. Note where CO2 is released and where O2 is consumed.

e. Note the side pathway for anaerobic metabolism and which waste product is produced by this pathway.

3. Consider your client's first question: what is meant by aerobic metabolism and what does the body require for this?

b. What is the special waste product of anaerobic metabolism of glucose?

4. Now consider how other compounds (besides glucose) are metabolized.

In the space below, re-draw your diagram from #2 and add where fats and proteins enter the system.

Be sure to include any breakdown process that converts fats and proteins into compounds that can enter the glucose metabolism pathway.

5. Consider the special waste produce from these other compounds.

a. What special waste molecules are produced as by-products to the metabolism of fats?

b. How do these waste molecules affect blood pH? Explain how/why

c. What waste molecules are produced as by-products to the metabolism of proteins?

d. What effect would these waste products have on urinary output? Explain How/Why.

6. What is the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis? (1/2 bonus point)
