Compact heat exchanger initial geometry selection

You are working on the preliminary selection of a compact heat exchanger. Air at 1 bar and 400 K with a velocity to be determined that may range from 10 to 20 m/s will flow across the bank of tubes, perpendicular to the tubes, to heat another fluid as part of an energy recovery system. According to your preliminary computations you defined the exit temperature of the air to be equal to 320 K. Because of vertical space considerations, the length of the tubes will be limited to 0.8 m.

You have four commercially available geometry choices to select from as shown the accompanying figures. Two of the heat transfer geometries correspond to finned flat tubes with straight extended surfaces (Figs. 10.93 and 10.94), the other two to finned flat tubes with undulated extended surfaces (Figs. 10.95 and 10.96).

Your preliminary decision will be made only based on heat transfer considerations, volume occupied, and pressure drop considerations; cost will not be considered initially. Your analysis must also include the effect of air velocity at 10 m/s, 15 m/s and 20 m/s.

Which one of the four alternatives would you select to start your final design computations?
