Different Perspective (Please ensure to be open-minded when reading Locked In - more often than not,  previous knowledge and research tends to solidify our thought process on differing issues).  When there is no room for new or conflicting information (which very well may go against our previous knowledge) our thoughts begin to shut down or dismiss this new or revealing information.  I would request that when you are feeling conflicted about any new information, to take a step back to give it more thought before accepting or dismissing that info. Many times the inability to see things from a "different perspective" (academia, politicians, etc..), has caused the sluggish ineffective and inefficient implementation towards reform.

The "Standard Story" (which is not totally false) referred to by Pfaff as - - Mass incarceration was ignited by the war on drugs (blame Nixon or Reagan), was pumped up by draconian sentencing and is now sustained by a “prison industrial complex” that puts profit before humane treatment and rehabilitation. Pfaff invites us to rethink our notions about how we got to this state of affairs in the first place, in the hope that doing so will suggest some additional approaches to fixing things. “Most of the reform efforts today,” he says, “are looking in the wrong places.”

The war on drugs is not the main driver of incarceration rates that have grown five-fold since 1972.

Overly long sentences are not the main problem.

The for-profit “prison industrial complex” is not the main problem, either.

The solution is at the front end, not the back end.
