ENG101

Annotated Bibliography for the Proposal Essay

Introduction

An annotated bibliography is simply a list of Works Cited entries followed by summary and evaluation of the sources. It is not a traditional essay per se but rather a step in the preparation of an essay. This annotated bibliography will be used to help with Essay 4, the proposal essay.

Directions

This assignment does not have a word count as each student’s sources will vary. Some may be summarized in three or four sentences while others may need much more. However, all annotated bibliographies will contain four sources that will be used in Essay 4. Each entry will start with a works cited entry followed by a summary of the source and then a one or two sentence evaluation.

You are encouraged to use your sources from Essay 3 on this assignment. Since the annotated bibliography has a different format than an essay, please look carefully at the sample in D2L.

Support

  • Minimum of four sources
  • Two of your sources may come from appropriate web sources, including online newspapers, magazines, or university websites. Anything from Wikipedia, Ask.com, ProCon.org, Quora, etc. will not count as a required source (web sources should be approved by the instructor)
  • All other sources must be from the databases (database sources do not require prior approval). If you would like, all sources may be from the databases. The YTC database Opposing Viewpoints would be an excellent resource for this assignment.
  • One of your four sources should support the counterargument (the other side’s perspective).

Format

Your annotated bibliography entries should be properly formatted like this:

Author last name, first name.Title of a Book, Title Underlined or Italicized. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. (or the proper MLA citation for your type of source such as a database article or web page)

Highlight this passage and replace it with your annotation. In the annotation, you merely describe what the book, web page, or article is about in summary style. Then write a sentence or two explaining how you will use the source in your essay (an evaluation). What kind of evidence does it provide? What idea does it support?  Notice that in this template, the annotation is indented and single spaced. Please follow this format.

Please note: use MLA format for the document with your name, my name, the class and date in the upper left and your last name and the page number in the upper right. Use one inch margins and 12 point font.

Submission Guidelines

Your essay should be submitted as a .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .rtf file via the D2L Dropbox before the date and time listed in the course calendar.
