Lab 1:
Lab 1: A Map of Crime Index 2 Goal The goal of this lab is to help you get familiar with various tools used in ArcGIS to obtain data, navigate through the system, customize views, and present your results in a comprehensive view. Final Result The final product of this lab is a map presentation similar to what is shown in the title page (Note, the presentation in the title page shows what the final product may look like. Your result does not have to be exactly the same as it). The requirements for the map presentation are as the following: The titled of the presentation is "Crimes in the Centre County, PA, USA". Four maps are included: 1. A crime index map of the US States; 2. A crime index map of the counties in Pennsylvania; 3. A map to compare the numbers of violent crimes across PA counties (with the graduated symbol method); and 4. A map to show the distribution of violent crimes in the Centre county (with the bar/column method, in 3D style). The scale of each map should be carefully selected to maximize the use of the space for required information. Map 4 should highlight the Centre country and show the county name. Boundaries of other counties should be visible, but names should be hidden. Map 1 should have an extend indicator to show the area seen in Map 2. Map 3 should have an extend indicator to show the area seen in Map 4. Map 4 should include legend. Each map should have a north arrow, a scale, and a label about what a map is. Data sets To complete this lab, you need to download two data sets: US crime index and PA crime index. In ArcMap, search for "Crime Index for the U.S." and "Crime PA 2002" to get them. The PA dataset includes data in both 2001 and 2002. When creating Maps 2, 3 and, you should use the data for 2002. This web site provides more details about the data attributes: http://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/DataSummary.aspx?dataset=942 When creating Map 2, you decide what data attribute to use for the PA index. When creating Map 3 and 4, choose at least three violent crimes for comparison. The crimes used in Map 3 and 4 should be the same. 3 Tips You need to be familiar with various tools to create these maps. The best approach is to go through the exercises from Chapter 3 to Chapter 10 in the GTKA book. This will lay a solid foundation for your later labs. After finishing each chapter, think about what you have done. The guidance in the book is excellent, but you need to review about what you have accomplished and understand what you have been through. If you really have to start with the final product, you can jump to Chapters 9 and 10 to learn how to create a presentation first, and then go back to Chapters 7 and 8 to know how to customize symbology. Then, you can learn other skills on the way of completing the lab. However, this may leave some holes in your knowledge that you have to fill later. Delivery You need to submit two document: lab report and map package. Lab report should include the following items: o A screenshot of the final product you have. o Description of what data attributes are used to create Map2, 3, and 4. Map package can be generated in ArcMap. Go the File menu, and select Share As -> Map Package. o Name the package in this format Lab1_yourPSUID. Grading rubrics (100 points total) Part of your grade will be based on the result shown in your map package. Make sure the package can be opened correctly. To verify the package, go to the ArcTool, and use the "Extract Package" tool (see the picture on the right) Correct map package: 20 points Map presentation: 65 points Overall layout: 2 points for correctly showing all maps. No partial credit. Title: 1 point for correctly presenting the map tile. Extend indicators: 2 points (1 each). Four maps: 60 points (15 each). For each map • Correct symbology used: 10 points. Partial credit is allowed. • Appropriate map scale: 2 points for showing regions only relevant to each map. No partial credit. • Map scale, legend, north arrow: 2 points for correctly showing scale, north arrow and other relevant legends. Partial credit is allowed. • Label for each map: 1 point Lab report (15 points) Correct screenshot (3 points) Data attribute description for Maps 2, 3, and 4 (12 points, 4 each).
