This underlying feelings and action in adults are insentient mental processes (Klein, 831). Klein states that adults must adapt to some form of behaviour change in order to maintain a satisfying life and keep from self destruction (Webber, 160).

The author seems to think that a baby bonds with the mother as a person when she breastfeeds the baby. I was especially moved by Klein’s statement that a baby feels love, and, on the other hand, hates, but the hate comes from the panic of losing the affection of the breast feeder, thus reparation of the baby’s feelings. In addition, guilt and distress caused by the interplay of these impulses end up influencing the babies love for the mother in quality and quantity.

I feel that Klein is trying to state that reparation to a baby is when its ego feels it undoes damage and restores peace, and that the feeling of reparation is tied together with guilt impulses (Klein, 806). After the reparation, the ego is transformed, and satisfaction is reached. Klein states that reparation is selfish and irrational, since the baby does it to steer clear of losing the mothers love. In my opinion, I feel that the baby is more satisfied with itself than the object the reparation is directed towards.

For example, a babyish child who has lost its mother struggles to find security from within itself, and will constantly cry and scream towards other people especially nannies. During this period, the toddler is interplaying with love and hate impulses. With time, the toddler will accept that the mother is not coming back and will have reparation towards the people who show love.

Klein states that reparation is not all about selfishness, but an act of individuality which means that it is an object-related passion motivated by love for the object of reparation. The author seems to want to focus an individual’s attention to the fact that
