Now that we've finished up the content curriculum, let's apply it. You must not only be familiar with the math from a computational lens, but you also must have extensive knowledge of which piece of the curriculum puzzle is appropriate for which grade level/age, based on the TEKS, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

Use the following link to familiarize yourself with the Math Vertical Alignment Chart, Prekindergarten through Grade 2Links to an external site. and Vertical Alignment Chart for Kindergarten through 6th GradeLinks to an external site.. Things to note:

  • 1. The process standards (p. 2 for PK-2, p. 3 for K-6) apply to all grade levels and should be incorporated as you work on content standards all year long. These are NOT separate skills.
  • 2. For K-6, the foundational skill is noted in the gray box and must be paired with the specific student standards below it (marked with letters).
  • Your familiarity with these charts will help you significantly on your EC-6 Core: Math certification test.

The Task

1. Identify different 5 things that surprised you (your "a-ha" moments) when looking at the PK-2. In a couple of well-developed sentences, explain exactly what you learned for each standard that surprised you. Notate the specific grade level and standard.

2. Identify different 5 things that surprised you (your "a-ha" moments) when looking at the K-6. In a couple of well-developed sentences, explain exactly what you learned for each standard that surprised you. Notate the specific grade level and standard.

For example,

  1. K(9)(D) under "Considering Income and Careers" - I had no idea that kindergarteners needed to know and understand the concept of income. The standard has them not only know what income is, but they must know how to differentiate between something that is income and something that is a gift. I would not have believed that a 5-6 year old should know the word "income".

You'll need to have 10 items, 5 from each document, with multi-sentence explanations to receive full credit.
