Since we will be having class on Wednesday, I'd like you to post some questions or comments (at least three) on the reading assignment for Wednesday in Perusall by Tuesday, March 17 at 8 p.m. After that, you can continue the annotation more fully at your own pace, before the final due date on Sunday.
Perusall is an online annotation tool that allows you to view the questions and comments posted by your fellow students. I hope that you will find it a fun and interesting way to share your insights on the readings and continue discussion outside of class.
Although it's fairly intuitive, I've made a video that you can watch to learn more about how Perusall works:
Introduction to Perusall
When you first arrive on the Perusall site, you'll be inside the assignment immediately and have an opportunity to take a tour of the annotation features. I suggest that you also click on the name of the course on the left-hand side menu so that you will go back to the course home page on Perusall. From there, you can look at some instructions under "Get Started" and also look at the assignment description before you continue.
Continue posting comments on this reading assignment and the one for Friday in order to get full credit for the final Perusall annotation, which is due on Sunday, March 22 by the end of the day. Use the study questions to guide you, but also follow your own instincts to find passages that affect you strongly.
I would suggest that you mark passages as you read the book (the hard copy) and then post some of your annotations online on Perusall. Use the search feature to find the passages that you are looking for.
I'm asking you to do this so that you can keep up on the reading and also continue discussing the text outside of class.
Here are some tips to succeed at this assignment:
- Ask probing questions about the reading so that I will know which parts are most difficult for you to understand. We'll discuss these in class on Wednesday and continuing next week.
- Upvote questions and comments by other students that you think are valuable and interesting.
- Make comments that are not merely summaries, but also interpretations. When you find something interesting, puzzling, beautiful or shocking, be sure to mark it and explain why you found it striking.
- Respond to your fellow students' comments and questions, so that you can help each other understand the reading.
- Check back frequently to see what new comments and questions have been posted.
- Don't forget to use hashtags! They will be very helpful for everyone in mapping out common themes and concerns in the text.
